Detectives from the Metropolitan Robbery Unit have charged a teenager following an investigation into an armed robbery in Bonnyrigg last month.
About 1pm (Monday 27 July 2015), the owner of an Asian grocery store on Brown Road was out the back of the premises taking delivery of stock, when two males entered, both allegedly armed with machetes.
As one of the males approached the counter, a young woman ran out the back door to safety.
One of the armed males allegedly walked behind the counter and grabbed two green shopping bags containing an amount of cash, while the second man kept watch at the front door.
Both men ran from the premises with the bags and were chased for a short distance by the owner, however both got away.
A crime scene was established and an investigation was commenced.
About 12.30pm today (Wednesday 5 August 2015), investigators from the Metropolitan Robbery Unit arrested a 17-year-old boy in Green Valley. He was taken to Green Valley Police Station.
Following his arrest, search warrants were executed at two homes in Green Valley, where a number of items were seized. The items will undergo forensic examinations.
The 17-year-old boy was charged with armed robbery with an offensive weapon. He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear at Childrens Court on Monday 31 August 2015.
Investigations into the incident are continuing.
