Police are appealing for public assistance following an armed robbery at a convenience store in Eltham early this morning.

Investigators have been told two men attended the store on Sherbourne Road and used a hammer to force entry via the front locked door about 3.20am.

Both men had their faces covered and were both armed with hammers when they approached the attendant.

It is believed one of the offenders jumped the counter and stole cigarettes and cash.

The attendant was not injured and the pair then fled the scene.

The offenders are perceived to be African in appearance and were both wearing dark hooded jumpers.

Heidelberg Crime Investigation Unit detectives are investigating and are keen to speak to any witnesses.
