A man and a woman are currently assisting police with their inquiries into an armed robbery that occurred in Mermaid Beach this morning.

Around 3am, a man armed with a hammer entered a convenience store on the Gold Coast Highway and approached the store attendant.

He made demands for money and cigarettes, and the attendant complied, handing over a sum of cash and cigarettes.

The man then walked around the counter and took a number of scratchies before fleeing the scene on foot.

Police attended and conducted a search, locating a man and woman on the beach a short time later.

No one was physically injured during the incident.

Investigations are continuing.
