Police are hunting a heavy handed bandit who attempted to break into an automatic teller machine on 16 July.

Investigators have been told that a man attended the intersection of the Frankston-Dandenong Road and Stephens Road, Dandenong South around 4am.

He approached the ATM, produced a sledge hammer and attempted to break into the machine.

The man was unsuccessful in his attempt and left the area a short time later.

The offender is described as 175-185 centimetres tall with a slim build.

At the time of the offence he was wearing a dark coloured long sleeved hooded jacket with fur lining, dark coloured pants and dark shoes.

Police have released photographs of a man that they believe may be able to assist with their investigation.
