Police are appealing for witnesses following a stabbing and bag snatch in Brunswick this morning.

A 25-year-old woman was walking along Albert Street to the Brunswick Railway Station when a man approached her from behind about 6.25am.

He put his hand over her mouth and demanded her handbag.

The Brunswick woman has handed over her bag to the man, who then stabbed her in the neck and fled.

She has managed to phone emergency services for help and was treated by paramedics.

Police are looking for a man who is about 170cm tall, with a thin build and wearing a black jacket and pants.
