A man has been charged with a number of offences after allegedly leading police on a chase after holding up a supermarket at knifepoint in the state’s north.
Police will allege about 2.45pm yesterday (Sunday 30 June 2013), a 32-year-old man filled his car with approximately $20 worth of fuel at a service station on Woodlark Street, Lismore, and drove off without paying for the petrol.
It’s alleged he then drove to a supermarket on Rous Road, Goonellabah, where he threatened a male shop employee with a knife, demanding cash.
The man left the store and police from Richmond Local Area Command were notified. The employee was not injured in the incident.
About 3.45pm, officers were patrolling the Lismore CBD when they saw the 32-year-old man driving in a vehicle Rotary Drive.
Police attempted to stop the car, however it’s alleged the man did not stop and led them on a pursuit during which he committed a number of traffic offences.
The car eventually did stop outside of Lismore Police Station, and the 32-year-old was arrested.
Officers searched the man’s vehicle and it’s further alleged they found a small amount of cannabis.
The Goonellabah man was charged with dishonestly obtain property by deception, robbery while armed with dangerous weapon, police pursuit – not stop – drive dangerously, and possess prohibited drug.
He was refused bail and will front Lismore Local Court later today (Monday 1 July 2013).
