Police are warning Territorians of the dangers of credit card theft, following a number of incidents in the Northern Suburbs recently.

Detective Sergeant Mark Bland said offenders are taking letters containing credit cards out of letter boxes and withdrawing funds.

“To withdraw funds without a pin or signature, these people are attempting to assume the identity of the victims, which is another danger entirely,” Detective Sergeant Bland said.

“In a recent case in Casuarina, the victim lost approximately $9,000 in this manner.

“Police urge Territorians to be vigilant with their bank accounts and cards. If you are expecting a new card in the mail, check the letterbox frequently. Don’t let mail pile up over a number of days. Better yet, have it sent to a post office box, or collect it directly from your nearest bank branch.

“If your card hasn’t arrived within the predicted time frame, or if you notice any suspicious bank account activity, please contact your bank immediately.”
