Quick thinking and the effort by a member of the public has assisted police with the arrest of man allegedly involved in a hotel robbery at Paralowie last night.

Just after 10pm, a man allegedly armed with a stick entered the bottle shop of the hotel on Waterloo Corner Road and threatened staff.

He jumped the counter and tried to take the till but only managed to steal a mobile phone.

The offender was chased, caught and restrained by a member of the public until police took over.

A 20-year-old man from Toorak Gardens has been charged with aggravated robbery and it is expected he will appear in Court sometime today.

While we admire and appreciate those who stand up for others – after all, this is what police do every day – we don’t want to see more people, and potential victims, placed at risk.

Every situation is different, so police can’t give you an absolute answer on whether to respond or defend yourself.  You must use your own judgement, but we ask that you think first before acting.

Ask yourself,  am I putting myself or my family in danger?  Could my actions make the situation worse? Is the person armed?  If I get hurt, does anyone know where I am? Have police been notified?

Remember, you don’t have to physically involve yourself in a situation to be of assistance – you can help by calling police.  As an eyewitness you can provide crucial information that may assist, such as the description of the suspect, vehicle details, any weapons, and direction of travel.
