Police remain at the scene of this morning’s bank robbery at Mt Pleasant and urge anyone who may have seen or heard something related to this crime to step forward.

Detectives say there are similarities between today’s incident and prior robberies carried out by the man known as the Bicycle Bandit.  That man is known to have committed 10 bank robberies from May 2004 to June 2009 – including two at this same bank.

“While there is a striking resemblance between today’s robberies and the Bicycle Bandit, we remain open-minded about who may have carried out this crime,” Detective Superintendent Peter Harvey said.

“While we understand the community will speculate on whether the Bicycle Bandit was responsible, we’ll be following up every line of enquiry and every piece of evidence, no matter where it takes us.

“Someone is bound to have seen something that can assist the investigation.  This was a brazen robbery were shots were fired.  It is extremely lucky no one was injured,” he said.

At about 11.40am, a man armed with a firearm entered the Bank SA branch on Melrose Street and demanded money.

Several shots were fired, however no one was injured during the incident.

The man fled with an amount of cash, and is believed to have left in a silver four-wheel-drive.

He’s described as being about 188cm tall, tanned complexion, solid build, and was wearing a black jacket and pants.
