Police have charged two men following an alleged attempted armed robbery in Highfields early this morning.

Police will allege that the pair, armed with metal bars, entered a tavern on Highfields Road around 7.20am before attempting to break into a secure office.

The pair were unsuccessful and left the scene in a vehicle.

A 31-year-old Highfields man was charged with one count each of enter premises with intent and attempted armed robbery.

A 26-year-old Mount Lofty man was also charged with one count each of enter premises with intent, attempted armed robbery and possession of a dangerous drug.

Both are expected to appear in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court tomorrow.

Investigations are continuing.
