Police are appealing for public assistance following an armed robbery near Newcastle this morning.

Just after 7.30am (Friday 29 June 2018), a man, armed with a knife, entered a service station in Patrick Street, Merewether.

He threatened a staff member before stealing cash and cigarettes and fleeing the store.

No one was injured.

Officers from Newcastle City Police District attended and established a crime scene.

Investigators wish to speak with a man who may be able to assist with their inquiries.

He has been described as being of Caucasian appearance, about 180cm tall, and was last seen wearing a grey hooded jumper and dark-coloured pants.

Anyone with information is urged to come forward.
