A man has been charged following the armed robbery of a supermarket in Newcastle West overnight.

Just before 1.30am (Wednesday 11 July 2018), a man entered a supermarket on King Street, and allegedly threatened a female employee with a syringe.

He demanded cash and cigarettes before jumping the counter and taking four mobile phones.

The man fled and police were notified.

Just before 3.45am, a man allegedly smashed the front window of a jewellery shop on Kenrick Street, The Junction, before taking several pieces of jewellery.

Officers from Newcastle City Police District attended both incidents and commenced inquiries.

About 5.30am, a 23-year-old man attended Newcastle Police Station and spoke with officers.

He was arrested and charged with robbery armed with an offensive weapon and break and enter house etc steal.

The man was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court today (Wednesday 11 July 2018).
