Detectives have charged a 50-year-old Fortitude Valley man following an alleged incident at a service station earlier this morning.

Around 1.20am, the man walked onto the grounds of the Barry Parade business and placed a suspicious looking device next to a petrol pump.

He then walked inside and threatened the attendant to give him money from the cash register.

The 50-year-old man has been charged with one count each of armed robbery and bomb hoax.

He is expected to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court later this morning.
