Detectives have charged an alleged getaway driver as investigations continue into the alleged armed robbery of cash-in-transit guards in Sydney’s south-west earlier this year.

Just after 11am on Thursday 5 April 2018, two armed guards were intercepted by a silver Volkswagen Golf as they exited their armoured truck for a delivery on Mackinder Street, Clemton Park.

Two men, both allegedly armed with rifles, got out of the Golf and threatened the guards, demanding cash.

One of the men allegedly approached the guards, and unsuccessfully attempted to remove one of their firearms, before stealing the cash bags and returning to the Golf, which was then driven from the location at speed.

The guards were not physically injured during the incident.

Officers from Campsie Police Area Command attended a short time later and established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist forensic officers.

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Robbery and Serious Crime Squad established Strike Force Callagher to investigate the incident.

Following extensive investigations, a 35-year-old man was arrested at Coonabarabran Police Station just after 10am today (Wednesday 14 November 2018), where he was charged with robbery while armed with dangerous weapon.

Police will allege in court that the man drove the Volkswagen to and from the area and demanded cash while armed with a firearm.

The Cambridge Park man was refused bail to appear at Coonabarabran Local Court today.

Shortly after the arrest, strike force investigators, assisted by the Public Order and Riot Squad, executed two search warrants at homes at Cambridge Park and Shanes Park

During the searches, detectives seized two pistols, cash, and a number of items relevant to the investigation.

The firearms will undergo forensic and ballistic examination.

As investigations continue, strike force detectives have released CCTV which depicts a silver Volkswagen, with dark tinted windows and distinctive wheels, arriving on Mackinder Street.

An armed man, with his face covered, is depicted getting out of the passenger side and approaching the security guards, before taking cash bags and fleeing the scene in the car.

Detectives are appealing for anyone who knows the identity of the man, or who has information that may assist with their inquiries, to come forward.
