Sexual Crime Squad detectives are appealing for public assistance to help identify a man wanted in relation to a sexual assault of a teenager in Bayswater at the end of June.

Police have been told a 14-year-old girl was at the Bayswater train station when she had a conversation with two men on Sunday 26 June around 8.30pm.

One of the males offered the young girl a cigarette and to buy her alcohol before they walked off together down the Mountain Highway towards a local bottle shop.

They continued on together to the rear of a sports centre in Valentine Street where the young girl was allegedly sexually assaulted.

The victim then left the rear of the sports centre to walk through Bayswater Park along a bike track that runs parallel with Dandenong Creek.

She was north of the Bayswater Oval when she was pushed to the ground by the same man, who attempted to sexually assault her.

The victim managed to fight off the offender and run back to the Bayswater train station where she called her mum to come and pick her up.

Investigators have released images and CCTV footage of a man who they believe can assist with their enquiries.

The man can be described as having a solid build, perceived to be Maori in appearance and spoke with a heavy New Zealand accent.

He was last seen wearing a beanie, shorts and a bag slung over his shoulder.
