ARMED bandits have escaped with a large amount of cash despite a group of patrons attempting to fight back at a suburban pub this morning.
Bar staff and patrons were still inside the Mary Ellen Hotel, Merewether, about 12.30am when three masked men stormed through the Railway Street premises.
They threatened staff and patrons with machetes before one patron refused to lie on the ground.
He was struck on the arm and back of the neck.
Other patrons started throwing glasses before one of the bandits forced a manager into a safe room.
They ran off towards Llewelleyn Street.
Newcastle detectives are investigating.
