A man has been arrested and charged over the alleged armed robbery of a newsagency on the state’s Mid North Coast last month.

About 5.45am on Saturday 24 November 2012, three men entered the business on Crescent Avenue, Taree, and approached the front counter.

The trio threatened the 69-year-old owner before allegedly assaulting him with iron bars and a baseball bat.

They fled with a sum of cash and cigarettes and were last seen leaving the area in a Nissan Patrol which was later confirmed stolen.

Police were alerted and officers from Manning- Great Lakes Local Area Command attended and launched an investigation into the incident.

The 69-year-old was taken to hospital for treatment to head and arm injuries.

The stolen vehicle was later found burnt out in bushland near Taree.

Following an extensive investigation by detectives, a 26-year-old man was arrested yesterday (Friday 30 November 2012) and charged with armed robbery with wounding.

The Taree man appear in Forster Bail Court today (Saturday 1 December 2012) and will reappear via video link at Taree Local Court on Tuesday 4 December 2012.
