Police are investigating an armed robbery at a general store north of Kyogle yesterday afternoon.

About 3pm (Sunday 24 February 2013), a man and woman were working behind the front counter at the store on Summerland Way, Wiangaree, when they were approached by five males armed with a large stick and a knife.

The males assaulted the employees while ransacking the store, stealing cash and alcohol, before fleeing in a stolen red coloured Ford Falcon.

The 64-year-old man and the 60-year-old woman were both taken to Lismore Base Hospital with facial injuries and bruising to their arms and legs.

Police from Richmond Local Area Command commenced a search for the males, locating the stolen vehicle in Bonalbo. All five men immediately fled from the vehicle when they were spotted.

Officers attached to the Dog Unit tracked the men for some distance but were hampered by the swollen creeks in the area following recent flooding.

A crime scene was established and police are currently looking at CCTV footage to identify the attackers.

The five men were described to police as being of Aboriginal appearance, in their late teens or early 20s.
