Detectives from the Armed Robbery Unit have charged a 24-year-old Woodford man following the 2006 armed robbery of the Mermaid Beach Post Office.

It will be alleged that on October 6, two masked men entered the post office, located on the Gold Coast Highway around 3.50pm, and threatened staff and customers with a handgun. One of the offenders stole a sum of cash before the pair fled in a stolen car, which was later located a short distance away.

Despite a thorough investigation conducted at the time, police were unable to identify the men.

On Friday May 3, 2013 detectives from the State Crime Operations Command’s Armed Robbery Unit charged a 24-year-old Woodford man with armed robbery, as well as deprivation of liberty and unlawful use of a motor vehicle. He was due to appear in the Caboolture Magistrates Court last Friday.

The Armed Robbery Unit conducts ‘cold case’ investigations into unsolved significant armed robberies; revisiting the available evidence as well as looking for fresh avenues of investigation, and the potential for using improved forensic analysis capabilities.

“This investigation is yet another clear example of our intent to relentlessly pursue offenders involved in violent crime regardless of how much time has passed,” Detective Superintendent John Sheppard of the State Crime Command’s Organised Crime Group said.
