General Crime Detectives have arrested a 21-year-old male in relation to two incidents that have occurred in the last two months.
The first incident the male is alleged to have been involved in was on Monday 18 July in Nightcliff.
Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Chris Board of the General Crime Section said a 22-year-old taxi driver collected the man in Rapid Creek and drove him to Grevillea Circuit in Nightcliff.
“It is alleged that the offender threatened the driver with a knife whilst demanding money,” Acting Senior Sergeant Board said.
“He fled the scene with a sum of cash.
The second incident occurred in Anula at around 9:10 pm on Tuesday 6 September.
“A 26-year-old taxi driver collected the alleged offender from the Beachfront Hotel and drove him to Driffield Street in Anula.
“Once at the location, he stated that he had a knife and assaulted the driver before fleeing the area empty handed.
“These acts were cowardly and I am pleased that with the assistance from the public that we have been able to locate and arrest him.”
He remains in Police custody and is likely to be charged later today.
Detective Senior Sergeant Scott Pollock said that at about 12:30 am, two men were involved in a verbal altercation at a bar in Parap.
“It is alleged that during the verbal altercation, a 30-year-old man punched a 28-year-old man in the face with a glass.
“The 28-year-old man was taken to the Royal Darwin Hospital after sustaining serious facial injuries.
“The 30-year-old man was charged with aggravated assault last night.
“Intoxicated or not, people really need to start taking responsibility for their actions as these incidents often effect people in both the short and long term.
“Glassing, or any type of gratuitous violence is intolerable behaviour and this man is lucky that his injuries were not life threatening,” Senior Sergeant Pollock said.
Sergeant Tony Henrys from Major Crime said, “A 57 year-old man was attacked and robbed of his cash after leaving the Parap Hotel at approximately 1.00 am this morning. The man was attacked with a rock in a grassed area at the corner of Woolner Road and Bishop Street, within view of the Stuart Highway.
“The male sustained serious head injuries before being found by a passer by at around 6.00 am this morning. He was rushed to Royal Darwin Hospital by St Johns Ambulance and remains in a serious but stable condition.
“Police are appealing for witnesses that might have seen the attack, or people in the general area at the corner of Woolner Road and Bishop Street.
Police have received a number of reports from victims who recently received notification from their banks that their credit card details had been used to attempt to purchase goods overseas.
Acting Superintendent Jody Nobbs said it appeared that on most occasions banks were quick to notice uncharacteristic card useage.
“In every case the victims received a phone call from their bank asking them if they were overseas and were trying to use their credit card,” A/Supt Nobbs said.
“When it became clear the card owner was still in Alice Springs the transaction was terminated and the card cancelled, however although in most instances the attempted fraud is detected in time, that isn’t always the case. Then even if the transaction is cancelled in time the victim still has to put up with the inconvenience of having their card cancelled.
“Most transactions or attempted transactions have taken place in the UK or the USA. We are yet to identify consistencies between the incidents, so it is extremely difficult to determine how the details are being stolen at this stage.
“The incidents involve different credit cards – some with micro chips and some without. And even a debit card. They also involve a number of different banks and no obvious consistency in the way the cards are being used which would help identify a connection or obvious vulnerability. Card holders are being reminded to be extremely vigilant when sharing their card details and where possible, use whatever secure payment measures are available.
“To assist in our inquiries we are appealing to anyone else who has been advised by their financial institution that their cards may have been fraudulently used to contact police. Anyone with information should phone 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
A 13-year-old boy is in custody following a robbery which occurred in the Alice Springs CBD overnight.
Police allege the boy was one of five offenders who assaulted and robbed a 19-year-old man near the KFC carpark just after 2am. The victim told police he was walking west along Stott Terrace when he was chased by the group of five males. When they caught up with him one of them punched him in the nose and the group fled with some of the victim’s cash. The incident was captured on CCTV footage.
The victim flagged down a passing police car and described the offenders. The 13-year-old boy was arrested in Bloomfield Street a short time later. He is yet to be interviewed.
Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident to come forward. Anyone with information should phone police on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
