Police are investigating the theft of a cash drawer from an automatic teller machine early this morning at Greenbank.

Around 3am police were advised of an alarm sounding from the ATM at a Pub Lane newsagent.

Upon arrival they found a small excavator, believed to have been stolen from a nearby work site, still idling in the carpark.

A window at the newsagent had been smashed and the ATM pulled from its mounts and dragged outside the business.  The machine had been forced open and the contents stolen.

Extensive, non-structural damage was caused to the newsagency.

Investigations are continuing.
