Police are investigating the robbery of a supermarket on the south coast last night.

About 10.30pm (Thursday 24 February), the supermarket on New Lake Entrance Road at Shellharbour was locked-up following the days trade, leaving about a dozen staff inside stacking shelves.

Two men, with faces covered, smashed a brick through the glass emergency door and entered the store.

The pair was armed with a hammer and a knife and they threatened staff.

The armed men left the store with cash and drove from the scene in a maroon Toyota Corolla.

The car was driven to a reserve nearby between Benson Avenue and Wallaroo Drive at Blackbutt, where it was set on fire and abandoned.

Police established a crime scene and have seized the shopping centre CCTV.

The car used by the robbers had been reported stolen from Mount Warrigal on Wednesday.

Police found a claw hammer and knife inside the car and they have been taken for forensic examination.
