Police are investigating following at attempted armed robbery in Brighton this morning.

It is believed a stolen Mercedes hatchback pulled up outside a jewellery store on Church Street, Brighton about 10.20am.

Four men, all with their faces covered and wearing dark clothing, got out of the car.

One man approached the front door of the business armed with a sledge hammer and attempted to smash it open.

When a security guard approached the door from inside the business, the man retreated.

All four men fled the scene in the stolen car and were last seen driving along Carpenter Street towards North Road.

The stolen car is believed to be a blue-silver coloured hatchback with Queensland registration plates.

The investigation is ongoing.
