A man has been arrested by detectives investigating the serious assault of a woman in Sydney’s inner west following extensive forensic analysis, including DNA examination.

About 2am on Friday 13 January 2012, a 23-year-old woman was walking along King Street, Newtown, when she was confronted by a man near the intersection of Queen Street.

Police were told the man assaulted the woman, who became unconscious, before dragging her into Queen Street. Passers-by disturbed the man a short time later and he fled the scene.

The woman suffered minor injuries and was treated by paramedics at the scene.

Detectives from Newtown Local Area Command, with assistance from the Sex Crimes Squad, have been conducting extensive inquiries into the incident, including the use of forensic analysis.

Based on those inquiries, a 37-year-old man was arrested yesterday afternoon (Tuesday 17 January 2012) at North Sydney and taken to North Sydney Police Station.

Officers also conducted a search warrant at an address in Burwood, seizing a number of items.

The man, from Burwood, was charged with attempt to choke with intent to commit serious indictable offence, inflict actual bodily harm with intent, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He was refused bail to appear at North Sydney Local Court today.
