ACT Policing has released its latest quarterly CrimeStatistics for 2012, which show the majority of offences reported to police have decreased when compared with the same period in 2011.
The fourth quarter of 2012 produced a decline in assault, sexual assault, burglary, motor vehicle theft, property damage and road collisions with injuries but an increase in thefts (excluding motor vehicle thefts) when compared with the same period (October to December) in 2011.
Property damage, which includes damage by fire, explosion and/or graffiti, has decreased overall in the ACT from 1436 (Oct-Dec 2011) to 1399 (Oct-Dec 2012). Of note, property damage incidents in Tuggeranong have decreased 27.5 per cent over the same period, from 406 in October-December 2011, to 295 reported offences in the October-December 2012 quarter.
A yearly analysis of the CrimeStatistics also indicates most offences are continuing to trend downwards in the ACT, when comparing with 2011. Only motor vehicle theft and road collisions with injury are up, increasing 12.5 per cent and 1.8 per cent respectively.
Acting Superintendent of ACT Policing Intelligence Chris Meagher said it was pleasing to see the crime statistics are continuing to generally trend downwards, and that police are now focusing resources to address the recent increase in motor vehicle thefts.
“As a primarily intelligence-led police force, we rely on these statistics and reports from members of the public to focus our resources appropriately,” Acting Superintendent Meagher said.
“The CrimeStatistics are a useful tool for police, and provides the community access to information to see what is happening in their neighbourhood, first-hand.”
In 2012 ACT Policing Operations dispatched police to more than 90,000 priority One, Two, and Three requests for police assistance. ACT Policing Operations took over 162,000 telephone calls in 2012, including 28,000 calls to Triple Zero.
The latest interactive CrimeStatistics can be found at police.act.gov.au.

Newly graduated recruits from the AFP College will join ACT Policing’s frontline officers for Operation Unite, which commences tomorrow night (Friday, December 7) across Australia and New Zealand.
Over this coming weekend (December 7-9), police officers from across Australia and New Zealand will support Operation Unite’s key objectives of re-enforcing messages to the community about the harmful effects associated with excessive alcohol consumption as well as targeting alcohol-related crime, violence and anti-social behaviour. Operational Commander Superintendent Brett Kidner said that Operation Unite has become a key operation for police across Australia and New Zealand as they attempt to change community perceptions and attitudes toward alcohol-related crime, violence and anti-social behaviour.
“Since it commenced a few years ago, Operation Unite has been a very successful initiative. We want people to go out and have a fun time, enjoy yourself, especially during the festive time, but you don’t have to drink yourself into a visit to the watch house or the hospital.
“Operation Unite will launch ACT Policing’s ‘Safe Summer’ campaign. The aim of the campaign is to provide the ACT community with education on how to protect themselves and their loved ones from harm this summer. We will be focussing on key messaging relating to alcohol, drugs, road safety and personal safety,” Superintendent Kidner said.
ACT Policing will be out in force with officers from the Alcohol Crime Targeting Team, Crime Prevention, Traffic Operations, Specialist Response Group and General Duties walking the streets.
Operation Unite commences on Friday night (December 7) and ceases Sunday morning (December 9).

ACT Policing is investigating multiple reports of suspected fraud by offenders using sophisticated “skimming” devices attached to Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) within the ACT.
Police believe offenders are attaching a device to the fascia of an ATM, which is then used to scan the data from the card’s magnetic strip. The PIN entered into the machine is then captured using a small camera linked to the device.
This is similar “skimming” technology to that which has been reported in other jurisdictions. ACT Policing’s Fraud Team will be liaising with detectives from other jurisdictions as part of its ongoing investigations.
More than a dozen examples of these unauthorised withdrawals from ATMs have been reported to police during November.
Police are warning customers to take precautions when using ATMs. They urge customers look for any irregular, unusual or suspicious devices attached to an ATM, and to use one hand to cover the other as the PIN number is entered into the keypad.
A 21-year-old Charnwood man will face the ACT Magistrates Court this morning (Monday, November 19) for an aggravated robbery in Higgins last week.
About 10.30am last Monday (November 12), the man entered the Food Works at Higgins and threatened a staff member with a knife. He left the store with a sum of cash.
CCTV images from the aggravated robbery were released to the media, and information provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers identified the man as a possible offender.
The 21-year-old man attended the Woden Police Station yesterday (Sunday, November 18) and was interviewed and subsequently arrested by Criminal Investigation detectives.
Detective Superintendent Brett McCann said this arrest once again demonstrated the importance of reporting information to police through Crime Stoppers, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem.
“This arrest was the result of police and the community working together, as an anonymous tip-off from a member of the public identified the offender. Your phone call or online report to Crime Stoppers could be the piece of information police need to make an arrest,” Detective Superintendent McCann said.
The man was taken to the ACT Watch House and was charged with one count of aggravated robbery with an offensive weapon. He will face the ACT Magistrates Court this morning, where bail will be opposed by police.
