At approximately 12.50am this morning (Friday 10th June 2011) Queenstown police were alerted to two males who had gained entry to the Queenstown Child Care centre. The males fled the scene in a stolen red 2000 model Ford XR6 sedan.
The vehicle was later sighted in Zeehan and the two males are believed responsible for burglaries at 3 businesses in Main Street, Zeehan.
Police located the vehicle on the Murchison Highway past Tullah and it was successfully intercepted with the deployment of road spikes. Police recovered a significant quantity of stolen property from the burgled local businesses in the vehicle.
The two male offenders fled into bushland and a large scale search is currently underway for them.
The two males are described as follows:
– First male approximately 185cm tall, large solid build wearing a dark hooded top
– Second male approximately 175cm, slim build, goatee beard, wearing a dark top.
A large number of police have been deployed to locate the males. The search and rescue helicopter was also deployed and assisted in the search for the two males.
At about 9pm on Sunday 29 May 2011, a pizza delivery driver from Burnie Domino’s was robbed by a male wielding a knife whilst making a delivery in the Burnie area.
The knife wielding offender was assisted by another male and both fled the scene on foot with a quantity of cash and four pizzas. Police later apprehended two males and conveyed them to Burnie Police Headquarters.
As a result of investigations, a 19 year old male and a 15 year old male youth were subsequently charged with Aggravated Armed Robbery and detained to appear at Burnie Court the following day.
Hobart Criminal Investigation Branch has been investigating two robberies committed upon University of Tasmania students.
The first was committed about 8.45pm on Wednesday 18 May and occurred on the corner of Regent and Alexander Streets Sandy Bay. In this incident two men have approached a male student and punched him a number of times to the face. This attack ended when the student surrendered his iPhone and the men fled on foot on Alexander Street travelling in the direction of Sandy Bay Road. As a result of this incident the student sustained a blood nose and a cut lip neither of which required medical treatment.
No description is available for these men, however, it is believed that they may be connected to a white vehicle, possibly a Holden Commodore which is fitted with a rear spoiler.
The second incident occurred about 12.20am on Saturday 21 May and occurred near the intersection of Regent and Lord Streets Sandy Bay. In this incident three men aged in their late teens to early 20’s have approached a male student from behind. The student has been forced to the ground where the men have attempted to remove a backpack which he was carrying. During the ensuing struggle one of the men have grabbed the student’s iPod from him and fled on foot on Lord Street in the direction of Parliament Street. As a result of this incident the student sustained grazes and a cut finger neither of which required medical treatment.
The men in this instance are described as:
- aged between 18 and 20 years
- approximately 180cm tall
- one man was wearing a white hoodie and possibly had blonde hair
- one man was wearing a black baseball cap.
A similar vehicle may also be related to this incident.
Detectives would like to hear from members of the public who may have witnessed either of these incidents or have information leading to the identity of the men. Anyone with information is requested to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
On Friday 13 May 2011, members of Devonport CIB, Western Drug Investigation Services and Burnie CIB, charged four men from Burnie with various offences in relation to two significant business burglaries in the Western District committed during early May 2011.
The charges relate to a $20,000 burglary and stealing from the Ridgley roadhouse, Ridgley on 3 May 2011, and a $16,000 burglary and stealing from the Devonport RSL.
The four men have been bailed and will appear in the Burnie Magistrates Court at a later date.

On Monday evening 2 May 2011 a burglary occurred at the Ridgley Roadhouse on the Ridgley Highway.
Offenders gained entry to the premises and a quantity of cigarettes and other items were stolen.
Police wish to speak with anyone who observed any person or vehicle in the vicinity of the Ridgley Roadhouse after 8:00pm on Monday night or anyone who has been offered discount cigarettes.
