Police have charged a 56-year-old Bungalow man with two counts of going armed so as to cause fear after he allegedly threatened staff at two Cairns media outlets with a knife this afternoon.

It will be alleged the man entered a Mulgrave Road business around 2.15pm where he produced a knife and threatened staff, including a 22-year-old Edge Hill woman and a 46-year-old Brinsmead man. Other staff inside the building locked themselves away before the man left a short time later.

It will be further alleged that a man threatened a 52-year-old Machans Beach male employee at a business in Sheridan Street around 2.50pm. The man produced a knife before fleeing.

Police were called to an Abbott Street business around 3pm where following a short struggle they arrested a 56-year-old man.

The man has been remanded in custody and is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court tomorrow where he will also face a charge of common assault and obstruct police.
