A man who fled from the scene of a police pursuit in Newcastle last week has been arrested, along with his partner, at a property in Shortland.

About 2.30pm on Monday 21 April 2014, officers from Newcastle City Local Area Command were called to a bowling club on Bridges Road at New Lambton, after reports of an armed robbery.

It is alleged two men, armed with a firearm and knife, entered the club and threatened staff members. They were handed an amount of cash and fled in a blue Holden Commodore.

No one was injured during the robbery.

About 3pm, police were patrolling the suburb of Shortland when they saw a vehicle matching the description of the one allegedly involved in the earlier robbery.

A pursuit was initiated, during which police deployed road spikes just north of the Hexham Bridge.

The vehicle was later dumped on Scott Close at Raymond Terrace, with three men running from the scene.

Police gave chase and arrested two of the men following a brief foot pursuit. They were taken to Raymond Terrace Police Station where one of them – an 18-year-old Raymond Terrace man – was charged in relation to the New Lambton armed robbery.

The other man – a 22-year-old from Raymond Terrace – was charged with five counts of robbery whilst armed.

Both men are currently before the courts.

The third man – a 23-year-old man – fled the scene but was arrested by detectives at a property on Marsden Street in Shortland shortly after 9.30am yesterday (Monday 28 April 2014).

The man’s 19-year-old partner was also arrested at the location, and both were taken to Waratah Police Station.

The 23 year old was charged with five counts of robbery whilst armed relating to:

– The armed robbery of a pub in Tarro on 2 April 2014;

– The armed robbery of a pub in Shortland on 6 April 2014;

– The armed robbery of a pub in Medowie on 10 April 2014;

– The armed robbery of a pub in Tenambit on 14 April 2014; and,

– The armed robbery of a bowling club in New Lambton on 21 April 2014.

He was refused bail and appeared in Newcastle Local Court yesterday (Monday 28 April 2014), where he was again refused bail to reappear on 18 June 2014.

The 19-year-old woman was charged with being an accessory after to the fact to armed robbery offences. She was granted conditional bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court on 22 May 2014.
