Police are appealing for public assistance after a woman was assaulted during an attempted robbery at Petersham yesterday (Sunday 22 May).

The 28-year-old woman was walking along Railway Street, Marrickville, towards Croydon Street, Petersham, when she was approached by four youths just before 6pm.

The woman began to cross the road to avoid the youths, but one of them took hold of her handbag.

She told police she refused to let go of the handbag and was subsequently dragged along the roadway before being kicked in the face.

The four youths ran off empty-handed and were last seen heading north on Queen Lane, Petersham.

The woman suffered injuries to her knees and arm but did not require hospitalisation.

Police are now hoping someone might have witnessed the incident or have information about the identity of the four male youths.

They are asking anyone who can assist with the investigation to contact Marrickville Police via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
