Police are investigating an armed robbery of a taxi driver in Exeter overnight.

About 11.45pm (Monday 13 February 2012), a 59-year-old male taxi driver responded to a job in Exeter Road.

A man entered the taxi at the location armed with a shotgun.

He threatened the taxi driver with the firearm and demanded he hand over cash.

The man instructed the 59-year-old man to drive the taxi north before performing a u-turn and stopping the vehicle outside Exeter Oval.

He took an amount of cash from the taxi driver and fled from the taxi.

The taxi driver reported the incident to police.

A crime scene was established on Exeter Road and the taxi was examined by forensic specialists.

The man has been described as 180cm tall with a solid build, 30 to 40 years old wearing a dark coloured beanie/balaclava
