Police arrested a man overnight after he allegedly stole a taxi at gunpoint in the western suburbs.
Just before 11pm, police were called to Woodville West following reports that a man had allegedly pointed a firearm at the driver of a car as he was travelling on Findon Road.
As police were investigating that incident, reports came in of a taxi having been stolen from outside the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Woodville Road, by a man armed with a firearm.
Unbeknownst to the thief, the Toyota sedan was fitted with a GPS tracking device which provided police with its location.
A short time later, police spotted the taxi on Henley Beach Road at Lockleys and pursued it through several back streets before the driver stopped on Noble Street and arrested without incident.
Police searched the taxi and located a double barrel sawn off shotgun, which was not loaded.
A 23-year-old man from Woodville West has been charged with aggravated robbery, possess firearm without a licence, drive dangerous to evade police, drive while disqualified and drink driving after he recorded a reading of 0.143 per cent.
He has been refused bail and will appear in the Port Adelaide Magistrates Court on Monday.
No one was physically injured.
