Police are investigating after a shot was fired during the attempted robbery of a service station in Sydney’s inner-west.

Just before 1am today (Saturday 22 November 2014), a man armed with both a firearm and knife entered a service station on Canterbury Road, Hurlstone Park.

The man, who was wearing a red and gold ‘ironman’ mask, threatened the male console operator with the weapons.

He locked himself in a storage area and contacted emergency services.

The armed man fired a shot towards the counter area, before running off along Canterbury Road empty-handed.

No one was injured in the incident.

Police from Ashfield Local Area Command were contacted and attended a short time later.

They conducted extensive patrols of the area with the assistance of the Dog Unit; however the man was not located.

A crime scene was established and examined by specialist forensic officers.

Detectives are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

The man is described as being about 20-25 years of age, approximately 180cm tall, with a medium to large build. He was wearing a grey hooded jumper and black pants.
