Crimes Related to Financial Institutions

Police are appealing for public assistance to help identify a man, who may be able to assist with inquiries into a robbery in Buddina on July 8.

At about 8.30am the man has witnessed a customer withdraw an amount of money from an ATM at a Point Cartwright Drive shopping centre.

A short time later the man approached the customer and threatened him into handing over the money.

The money was handed over and the man fled the area.

He is described as Caucasian with mousey brown hair, 175cm tall, thin build.

Detectives from the Serious Crime Task Force arrested a man yesterday wanted in connection with an aggravated robbery at Seacombe Gardens earlier this month.

At 1.30am on Wednesday 8 June, police were called to the BankSA branch on Sturt Road after reports a man armed with a knife had allegedly confronted and threatened a cleaner as he was leaving the building.

Police will further allege the suspect then entered the bank and left shortly after taking a small bag containing documents.

No one was physically injured during the incident.

Police conducted a search of the area with the assistance of a police dog but were unable to locate anyone.

A 38-year-old from Seacombe Gardens has been charged with aggravated robbery and carry an offensive weapon.  He has been refused bail and will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court later today

Police are currently at the scene of an aggravated robbery that occurred at a business overnight.

At 1.30am police were called to a BankSA branch on Sturt Road after reports a man armed with a knife confronted and threatened a cleaner as he was leaving the building.

The offender then allegedly entered the bank and left shortly after taking a small bag containing documents.

No one was physically injured during the incident.

Police searched the area with the assistance of a police dog but were unable to locate anyone.

Sturt CIB and crime scene will be attending the bank this morning to continue the investigation.

Police have released CCTV images as investigations continue into an attempted armed robbery at Queanbeyan yesterday.

About 1.40pm (Tuesday 7 June 2016), emergency services were called to a bank on Monaro Street, Queanbeyan, following reports of a robbery.

Initial investigations suggest a man wearing dark clothing and with his face covered, entered the bank and threatened staff with a shortened firearm, before fleeing empty handed.

No one was injured during the incident.

The man was last seen driving away in a silver Honda sedan, which had been reported stolen from a Queanbeyan address last week.

The Honda was later discovered burnt out at a park on Blundell Street, Queanbeyan East.

The vehicle was seized and will undergo forensic examination.

Detectives from Monaro Local Area Command are continuing their investigations and have released a CCTV image of a man who may be able to assist with their inquiries.

In addition, they have released an image of the vehicle, and would like to speak with anyone who may have seen it in the area yesterday afternoon.

Police are investigating an attempted armed robbery in Queanbeyan this afternoon.

A crime scene was established and investigations are continuing.

Police are investigating an attempt to break into an ATM in the city early this morning.

A security patrol responded to an alarm activation at an ATM on Plane Tree Drive, Adelaide about 3.30am on Friday 27 May and found the front of the machine damaged.

It appears that someone had attempted to blow the front of the machine off to gain access.  However, no access was gained and no cash stolen.

Crime scene investigators have attended and members from Explosives Coordination Section will attend the scene this morning.

At 1.23pm on Tuesday 24th May 2016 a man entered Westpac Moonah’s premises in Main Road, Moonah, approached the bank teller and demanded money. No money was handed over, and the man fled the bank on foot and headed south.The man then entered Harris Scarfe about 1.40pm, where he approached a staff member, demanded money and left with an undisclosed amount of money contained in the cash register.

The man was last seen exiting onto Charles St.

No staff or customers were injured during the incidents and no weapon was sighted.

The man, believed to be aged between 35-45 years, is described as being:

  • Of Caucasian appearance
  • 175-180cm (approx. 5ft 10 inches) tall,
  • Thin build
  • Salt and pepper beard
  • Wearing a light grey/beige zip jacket, black trackpants/trousers, black beanie and light coloured shoes.

A man has been charged as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged banking fraud.

Strike Force Cottenham is a joint investigation by the State Crime Command’s Fraud & Cybercrime Squad and the Australian Federal Police (AFP).

The strike force was formed in December 2014 to investigate large-scale fraud offences committed against financial institutions involving internet bank accounts.

Following extensive inquiries, a 19-year-old man was arrested at a home in Dundas Valley yesterday (Thursday 26 May 2016).

He was taken to Parramatta Police Station and charged with two counts of knowingly dealing with proceeds of crime, knowingly directing activities of a criminal group, and using a false document.

Police will allege he submitted a fraudulent form to gain unauthorised access to bank accounts and withdrew a total of almost $450,000.

He has been granted bail and is due to appear at Burwood Local Court on Wednesday 20 July 2016

Inquiries by Strike Force Cottenham detectives continue and further arrests are expected to be made.

To date, 41 people have been charged by the strike force, with more than 436 offences.

Investigators are also warning the public, especially students and foreign nationals, who may be approached to take part in these offences that they face significant penalties, criminal convictions, and terms of imprisonment.

A serving member of the Australian Defence Force has been arrested by police investigating the armed robbery of a financial institution at the Richmond Air Force base in 2014.

Just after 3.30pm on Friday 7 February 2014, police responded to reports of an armed hold-up at a financial institution on Percival Street, Richmond.

It will be alleged a woman armed with a gun entered the building and threatened a female staff member before fleeing with cash.

The Robbery and Serious Crime Squad established Strike Force Potto to investigate the matter and has been working in partnership with the ADF Investigative Service.

They have conducted extensive inquiries into the incident and last month conducted further forensic examination at the financial institution.

Police will allege two women were involved in the robbery.

Just after 8am today (Thursday 21 April 2016), Strike Force Potto detectives attended the base at Richmond with the assistance of military police and arrested a 21-year-old female member of the ADF.

A search warrant is also being executed at the woman’s home in Sydney’s west.

The woman was taken to Windsor Police Station where it is anticipated she will be charged with armed robbery, conspiracy to commit armed robbery and firearms offences.

Detectives are now asking for any person with information about the incident, particularly the involvement of a second woman, to come forward.

Armed Crime Squad detectives continue to investigate an alleged armed robbery in Newcomb yesterday.

The alleged armed robbery took place at a financial institution on Bellarine Highway about 3pm.

A 29-year-old Geelong woman has been charged with armed robbery and appeared in Geelong Magistrates’ Court today.

Police continue to search for the man involved in the incident and a grey or light- coloured VN Holden Commodore Sedan.

Investigators have released CCTV and images of a man they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.
