This was the sixth Operation Unite.
Police from Prahran Embona will investigate an armed robbery at a service station in St Kilda overnight.
Detectives have been told that two men entered the premises at the intersection of St Kilda Road and Alma Road just before 1.45am.
Armed with knives and with their faces concealed, one of the men approached the attendant within the store making threatening demands while the other jumped the counter through a wire grid.
The men made off with the cash register, leaving the store on foot and were last seen heading east on Alma Road.
One of the men was described as wearing a light grey hooded jacket and black shorts.
The other was described as wearing a black sleeveless puffy jacket with a grey and black horizontal stripe hooded jacket and dark coloured pants.
Both men are described as having a medium build.
Victoria Police has today published its latest crime statistics.
The statistics compare the 12 months to September 2012 with the 12 months to September 2011.
The overall recorded crime rate across the state has increased by 5.9 per cent, measured as a rate per 100,000 of the population which is standard across Australia. The total number of offences recorded is up by 7.5 per cent (up 27,516 offences to a total of 395,406 offences).
Crime against the person has increased by 11.3 per cent per 100,000 population. This is largely due to an increase in the rate of assaults, up 14.2 per cent.
Crime against property has increased by 1.7 per cent as a rate per 100,000 population, mainly due to an increase in theft of motor vehicles, up 7.6 per cent, and theft from motor vehicles, up 4.7%.
Drug offences have increased by 20.7 per cent as a rate per 100,000 population.
Other crimes such as justice procedure offences and behaviour in public offences have increased by 18.3 per cent as a rate per 100,000 population.
Deputy Commissioner Lucinda Nolan said family violence was still a driver of increasing crime statistics, with the rate of family violence-related crime increasing by 37 per cent.
DC Nolan also attributed the increase in statistics to more possession and use of drugs across the state, causing crimes against the person and property crime to rise too – a trend seen over the past 12 months.
The local area commanders in charge of each police service area have provided a written commentary accompanying the statistics. To view them visit My Place at www.vicpolicenews.com.au/myplace

Police are warning community members to be on their guard following a series of scams targeting vulnerable bank clients.
Sunbury police have received several reports from residents who say they have been victims of the new fraud, which aims to dupe bank customers into parting with their hard- earned cash.
Investigators believe the con artists cold call bank customers posing as staff members from the bank’s head office.
They tell the victim that they have been overcharged for account holding fees and will be reimbursed a large amount of money.
The victims are given a pin number which they are asked to confirm during a second phone call the following day.
They are then instructed to send a money order to an address in India to cover a 10% GST charge.
Senior Sergeant Jeffery Verinder said the scammers were extremely convincing and were armed with personal information about their potential victims.
“They are very credible,” he said.
“They will give a name and staff ID number.
“They know the victim’s account details, BSB number, date of birth and home address.
“They even know how long the person has held their account for and use this information to their advantage.”
The fraudsters ask their victims for their driver’s licence details and appear to be targeting bank clients over 50 years of age.
At least five victims have come forward so far and investigators would like to speak to anyone who believes they may have been targeted.
At this stage, it’s believed that none of the victims paid up.
Police are urging anyone who receives similar calls to steer clear of the trick and not to provide personal information or payments to the callers.
“Do not make any payments and report the matter immediately to the police and your bank,” S/Sgt Verinder said. Anyone with any information about the scam should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or contact their local police station.
