A man will appear in court tomorrow after being charged over an alleged armed robbery at Murwillumbah on the state’s Far North Coast.

Detectives have renewed their appeal for public assistance as they investigate an armed raid on a credit union at Murwillumbah, on the NSW-Queensland border, late last month. nnAbout 4pm on Monday 30 May 2011, a man entered the Commercial Road branch of a credit union and allegedly threatened staff with a firearm. He allegedly stole a sum of cash before fleeing along the western bank of the Tweed River, which runs behind the credit union. No shots were fired during the incident and no-one was injured. nnPolice from Tweed/Byron Local Area Command responded quickly to the incident, however, a search of the area failed to locate the offender. Local detectives conducted extensive inquiries into the incident and today executed a search warrant at premises in Quarry Road.

A 42-year-old man was arrested and charged with armed robbery, plus firearms and drug offences. He was refused bail to appear in Tweed Heads Local Court tomorrow (Tuesday 28 June 2011).

A 26-year-old man was also arrested and charged with firearm and drug offences. He was granted conditional bail to appear in Tweed Heads Local Court on 4 July 2011.

Tweed / Byron Local Area Command Crime Manager, Inspector Shane Diehm, has thanked the public for their assistance in this case.

“The arrest was as a result of information received from members of the public and swiftly acted upon by investigators.”

“This is a great example of police and their local community working together to combat crime and anti-social behaviour. Officers within Tweed/Byron LAC remain focussed on reducing crime and I encourage members of the community to contact investigators or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 with any information relating to crime or suspicious behaviour.”
