Strike force detectives have made another arrest in their long-running investigation into large-scale mortgage fraud offences.About 11am Tuesday 2 August 2011, a 37-year-old man was arrested at Newtown Police Station. The man was subsequently charged with using a false document (12 counts) and dealing in the proceeds of crime.

He’s been granted conditional bail to appear in court on a date to be fixed.

The alleged offences relate to the fraudulent financing of luxury motor cars, earth-moving equipment, computers, Harley Davidson motorcycles, a motor cruiser and property at Botany, with a combined total value of $3.27million.

Police will allege the Leichhardt man is part of a wider, organised criminal syndicate involved in large-scale fraud within the finance industry.

Today’s arrest follows exhaustive inquiries by Strike Force Apia, which was established by Fraud Squad detectives in September 2007 to investigate cases of complex, large-scale mortgage fraud.

Sixteen people have previously been charged with more than 100 offences relating to fraudulently obtained loans worth $16million.

The strike force has also prevented the processing of other fraudulent loan applications totalling more than $55 million.
