Police are investigating the attempted armed robbery of a fruit shop south of Sydney this morning.

About 6.20am (Wednesday 14 March), two men, one armed with a handgun, entered the grocery store on Jones Avenue at Mount Warrigal.

One of the men threatened an employee and demanded cash.

The pair left empty-handed and drove from the scene in a dark coloured Holden Commodore being driven by a third man which was parked near the rear of the shop.

The victim was not injured and police from Lake Illawarra Local Area Command established a crime scene.

The three men all had their faces disguised and were wearing dark clothing.
